The holidays are a time for celebration , and for the sharing and honouring of tradition. For many of us, we begin to get into the holiday spirit by hauling out favourite decorations that have been handed down through generations, or by whipping up some sweet treats from an old family recipe. At the Vancouver Island Symphony, we mark this magical time of year by presenting the special and traditional music of the season – music that evokes childlike wonder, festive good cheer, and the spirit of love and giving that defines and embodies Christmas.
For our Holiday Spirit Program on December 3 rd at the Port Theatre, we will be offering up classical and modern jazz versions of the Nutcracker Suite, as well as holiday favourites performed by the VIS Symphonic and Children’s Choirs and the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra. VIS Artistic Director, Pierre Simard, has created a program that will delight audiences young and old and allow us to embrace the spirit of the season. With the Port Theatre’s stage hosting more than 150 musicians and performers, there is no finer way for Nanaimo audiences to get into the Holiday Spirit – you may even be enticed to sing along to a carol or two!
The Vancouver Island Symphony is delighted to welcome the Vancouver Island University’s Big Band to the stage. We will enjoy some wonderful versions of the Nutcracker Suite. The Symphony players will be performing the classical movements composed by Tchaikovsky more than a century ago – one that is known the world over as a staple of the Christmas season, as well as having infiltrated popular culture through movies like Disney’s Fantasia and even Canadian Tire commercials. The VIU Big Band will perform variations arranged by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, originally released in 1960 and focussed through a big band jazz lens.
Following the Nutcracker pieces, the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra (Calvin Dyck, Director) will have their chance to shine their Holiday Spirit on stage. Performing traditional and contemporary seasonal favourites, these young musicians have been wowing Canadian audiences with their ebullient musical talent - don’t miss an opportunity to hear them play!
No holiday music spectacular would be complete without a carol or two. The Vancouver Island Symphonic Choir and the Children’s Choir, led by Patricia Plumley, director will transport you to the joyful days of Christmases past as their sweet voices envelop you like a warm hug. If the holiday spirit moves you, you might even join in and sing along!
The gift of music is one that stays in your heart and your memories for a lifetime. Come celebrate the Holiday Spirit – the spirit of generosity, joy, love and hope – with the Vancouver Island Symphony and let the magic of the season into your heart.
